Issa Hayatou, Former FIFA Executive, Passes Away

A Giant of African Football

Longtime Leader of African Soccer Succumbs to Illness at 78

Issa Hayatou, the former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a long-time member of FIFA's executive committee, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2023, in Paris, France.

A Disciplined Leader

Hayatou was born in Garoua, Cameroon, on August 9, 1946. He rose through the ranks of African football administration, serving as President of CAF from 1988 to 2017. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the African Cup of Nations and the development of women's football on the continent.

However, Hayatou's reputation was tarnished in 2011 when he was disciplined by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his alleged role in a bribery scandal at FIFA. The scandal ultimately led to the downfall of then-FIFA President Sepp Blatter.

Interim President of FIFA

Despite the controversy, Hayatou remained a prominent figure in football. In 2015, he was elected as Interim President of FIFA after Blatter was suspended. Hayatou served in that role until 2016, when he was succeeded by Gianni Infantino.

Legacy and Recognition

Hayatou was a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of football, particularly in Africa. His legacy will be remembered for his long-standing commitment to the sport and his tireless efforts to promote it across the continent.
