Buttigieg Focuses on World-Leading Transportation System

Former Mayor and Presidential Candidate now Oversees Transportation Department

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Former South Bend, Indiana mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was sworn in on February 3, 2021, as the 19th Secretary of Transportation. As Secretary, Buttigieg has prioritized building a world-leading transportation system that will create jobs, improve safety, and reduce congestion.

Buttigieg, who is openly gay, is the first openly LGBTQ person to serve in a Cabinet-level position in the United States.

Prior to his election as mayor in 2011, Buttigieg served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2014.

Buttigieg's appointment as Transportation Secretary was seen as a major victory for the LGBTQ community. It is also a sign of the growing diversity of the Biden administration.
